Successful housebreaking is, by far, the most important element of a loving, lifelong relationship between you and your dog.
If you don’t teach your new best friend not to pee and poop in your house, he won’t be your friend for long!
Fortunately, housebreaking a puppy (or adult dog) isn’t complicated. All you have to do is prevent peeing and pooping in the house, and reward peeing and pooping outside. While putting this simple concept into practice isn’t difficult, it does require your diligence, dedication, and patience. But the rewards are definitely worth the effort!
In this report, we’ll provide some general information about dogs on which our housebreaking techniques are based, explain the benefits of crate training, and then give you the step-by-step process for housebreaking your dog.
Five Facts
Here are five facts that will guide your housebreaking training:
Fact 1: Adult dogs can be housebroken the same as puppies.
If you adopt an adult dog, you may not have to worry about housebreaking if he has already been properly trained. Dogs—even the smartest ones—do not naturally know it’s wrong to go potty indoors.
They must be trained, and most adult dogs are. But you can’t assume this is the case. If he was always kept outdoors, raised in a cage at a puppy mill, or improperly trained by a previous owner, you will need to start fresh and housebreak him using the same basic techniques as you would for a puppy.
Adult dogs don’t have to go as often as puppies, though, which will make the training much easier for you. (On the other hand, adult accidents will create bigger messes!)
Fact 2: Puppies have limited bladder & bowel control.
A puppy younger than 20 weeks old will need to go potty once every hour when awake. A very young puppy (under 12 weeks old) will need to go more often—every 30 minutes or even more frequently.
For an older puppy, a general rule for determining the number of hours he can go without going potty is to take his age in months and add one. So a four-month-old could hold it for about five hours.
Small breeds can’t hold it as long; large breeds can hold it a bit longer. Remember, this is a general rule; your puppy’s control may vary.
When sleeping, puppies can wait longer. But don’t think a puppy who can hold it for 6 hours while sleeping can hold it that long while awake. He can’t.
Fact 3: Dogs like to sleep in a clean area.
If given a choice, dogs, like people, will never sleep in an area that is soiled with pee or poop. In the wild, “dogs” (wolves, coyotes, foxes, etc.) sleep in a den and go outside to relieve themselves. Their pups learn to do the same.
Because dogs will try their best not to soil their sleeping area, your puppy is less likely to pee or poop in a small “den.”
Confining him to that “den” whenever you can’t watch him will guarantee he doesn’t get a chance to begin the bad habit of going anywhere else in your house.
Fact 4: Dogs do best when kept to a routine schedule.
Feeding your dog on a set schedule will help him to go potty on a regular schedule. If you let your dog eat and drink whenever he wants, you’ll be less able to predict when he’ll need to go out. Take him out on a regular schedule, too!
Fact 5: Punishing a dog after he has an accident in the house is pointless, and may do more harm than good.
Your dog will not understand that you are upset about something that happened in the past—even if it was just a minute or two ago. He will think he’s in trouble for what he’s doing at the instant you discover the mess and go ballistic… whether he’s happily coming up to greet you or sitting quietly. This, obviously, is the wrong message to give your dog.
Common Scents
A dog relies on his nose and scent to find “the bathroom.” If a dog has gone potty in your house before, this will leave behind a chemical scent that says “this is the potty place!” This scent will be hard for your dog to resist.
That’s why you should make sure there is no odor of urine or feces in the house before beginning to housebreak a new dog or puppy.
Do not use a cleaning solution that contains vinegar or ammonia (the scent is too close to urine scent). You can use baking soda or club soda… or purchase special odoreliminating cleaners at a pet supply store.
Equally important to cleaning up the scent of past mistakes is marking rooms with the scent of your happy “pack.” A dog will be reluctant to go potty where he and his pack (you and your family) live.
That’s why an unhousebroken dog who can’t get outside will often run to a rarely used area of the house, such as a guest room, to go potty.
Once you have removed the scent of urine or feces, spend time in each room with your dog (especially the rooms you rarely use). Sit on the floor and play with your dog in each room for several minutes each day. Soon the room will be marked with a scent that says to your dog, “this is a no-potty zone!”
It will be difficult to mark every area of your house this way, and even if you could, this is more of a passive deterrent than a foolproof method to prevent your dog from going potty indoors; additional action is needed, especially for a puppy.
Crate Training and Housebreaking Go Hand-in-Paw
If your puppy is free to run all over the house, he’ll go potty whenever he gets the urge instead of learning to hold it. You can’t watch him closely enough all the time to prevent this. So set him up for success instead of failure.
Remember Fact 3: Dogs Like to Sleep in a Clean Area. By confining your puppy (or dog) to a “den,” you will inhibit him from peeing or pooping (teach him to hold it), since he won’t want to soil his sleeping area. You’ll also be able to accurately predict when he needs to go potty: immediately after being released from confinement.
We recommend you create a cozy den for your puppy out of a dog crate.
Make sure the crate is big enough for your puppy or dog to be able to stand up, turn around, and lie on his side—but not so big that it gives him room to pee or poop in there without lying in it.
Line the crate with a towel you’ve used or a t-shirt you’ve worn (so your scent is on it). Make the crate comfortable for your puppy.
Place the crate in a quiet area, away from distractions (not too close to a window or in a high traffic area of your house), but not away from his “pack” (you and your family).
Some people choose to put the crate in their bedroom, but this may interrupt your sleep as the puppy will likely whine (and/or bark) the first few nights.
Before confining your puppy to his crate, you first need to teach him to enjoy being in it. Say “crate” and toss a few treats into the crate and see if he goes in to get them. Praise him if he goes inside. If he doesn’t go inside, put the treats on the lip/entrance of the crate, instead.
Gradually move treats farther into the crate until he goes all the way inside to get them. Do not close the door; let him go in and out as he pleases.
Make it a fun game by tossing treats into the crate a few times in a row, off and on throughout the day. Say “crate” whenever you want him to go in, and praise him when he does.
After he appears comfortable with the crate and eagerly runs in to get the treats, shut the door for a second after he goes in… then open it and let him out. Do that a few times. Then try shutting the door and leaving it shut as you feed him a few treats through the door. Then let him out.
The next step is to stuff a hollow chew toy (such as a Kong®) with something delicious. Let your puppy sniff the stuffed chew toy and then place it in the crate.
Shut the door with your puppy on the outside. Usually it takes just a few seconds for your puppy to beg you to open the door and let him inside.
Say “crate,” let him into the crate, praise him for going inside, and shut the door. Once he’s busy licking the treat out of the chew toy, walk away. Return before he finishes licking all the goodies out of the toy, and open the door.
Don’t let him take the chew toy out of the crate; take it from him.
Next, tie the freshly stuffed chew toy to the inside of the crate and leave the door open. Your puppy can then choose whether he wants to remain outside or go into his crate and start licking the treat from his chew toy.
Most puppies choose to rest happily inside the crate and work on the stuffed chew toy. He may even fall asleep in there when he’s done.
Close the door.
Speaking of sleeping, you’ll also want to put your puppy in the crate when he’s sleepy. Encourage him to get into his crate with treats and by saying “crate” when you notice he’s about to fall asleep. Close the door after he goes in. If you find him already asleep, pick him up and put him inside, as gently as you can. Close the door.
With several instances of this pre-conditioning, some puppies will quickly accept being confined in their crate at night; others will whine or bark like mad to be let out. Sometimes putting a cover over the crate will help your puppy to settle down and go to sleep.
Ignore a puppy’s immediate whining and barking to be let out, otherwise you’ll teach him that whining and barking is the key to getting what he wants (very bad idea). Most puppies will settle down after a few minutes and go to sleep.
If he starts whining after being quiet for a while, he may need to go potty. You should take him outside, but don’t let him out of the crate as he’s whining. Wait a moment to see if his whining pauses, and then quickly open the door and take him outside.
If he doesn’t pause on his own, make some sort of noise that will cause him to stop whining and listen. Then get him out right away before he starts whining again.
Use the crate at night and during the day whenever you’re unable to watch your puppy or have him outside.
Do not use the crate as “punishment.” If you scold your puppy and then lock him in the crate, he’ll associate the crate with being punished. You want him to think of his crate as his comfortable den—not a jail cell.
Follow these steps, and after just a few days your puppy will consider the crate to be his safe, cozy den and will happily rest inside.
It’s All in the Timing
Successful housebreaking is all about timing. Your goal is to have your puppy in the right place (outside) at the right time (when he needs to go); and avoid having him in the wrong place (inside) at the wrong time (when he needs to go).
This will be much easier when you’re able to predict when your puppy needs to go.
Keep Fact 2: Puppies Have Limited Bladder & Bowel Control, in mind.
Usually, puppies need to pee right after waking up from a nap, and poop within a couple of minutes of that. If you don’t want to wait around for your puppy to wake up and do his business, you can wake him up when you are ready and the time is right.
Another critical element of timing is that you immediately reward your puppy for doing the right thing (we covered this in our Pre-Training Basics report). When your puppy goes potty when and where you want, your immediate and lavish rewards (praise and yummy treats) will teach him to repeat this correct behavior.
Step-By-Step Housebreaking Process
A new puppy (or dog) that is not housebroken should be restricted to one of these three situations at all times:
1. Inside under your constant and attentive supervision.
2. Outside with you.
3. Confined to his crate/den.
Situation 3 is where your puppy should spend most of his time during the housebreaking process.
Did you notice that we did NOT include a situation where you leave your dog outside all the time?
Many people mistakenly think that puppies kept outside will be less trouble— after all, they won’t be peeing and pooping in your house, and they won’t need your constant supervision, right?
But here is the reality: puppies left outdoors and unsupervised for long periods of time seldom become housebroken.
They tend to bark, chew, dig, and escape from your yard. Outdoor puppies also become so excited on the rare occasions when they are allowed indoors (excited puppies tend to pee without warning), that eventually they are no longer allowed inside at all. We don’t want that. You shouldn’t want that.
Here’s how to housebreak your four-legged friend:
1. Determine where you want your dog to go potty.
It’s best to pick a doggy toilet area that’s relatively close to the door, so you and your dog don’t have too far to go when he’s gotta go. Give the location some thought, because after he’s trained, your dog will continue to use this place as his toilet.
This is convenient for clean-up time, especially if you have a large yard—and your family won’t have to be wary of little “landmines” when playing outside in the non-doggy-toilet areas.
2. Know when your puppy needs to go.
Until your puppy is trained to tell you when he needs to go outside (don’t worry, that will eventually happen), you have to be an expert at deducing this.
Sometimes a puppy will need to go within 5 minutes of going! Don’t assume you don’t have to watch him just because he’s just gone potty.
Here’s when you should take a puppy out to go:
• Immediately after he wakes up.
• Immediately after letting him out of his crate/den.
• Every 30 to 60 minutes while he’s awake, based on his age (see Fact 2).
• After he eats or drinks.
• When he’s been doing something for a while (like chewing on a toy), and then gets up and starts looking around.
• When he starts sniffing the floor.
• When he goes to an area where he’s gone potty before.
• When he’s running around and excited more than usual.
• When he’s look at or wandering near the door.
• When he’s pacing, whining, or starts to squat (duh!).
Note: Male puppies squat to pee just like female puppies (versus lifting a leg) until they are 4-9 months old.
3. Keep your puppy under your constant and attentive supervision, or confined to his crate, when indoors.
It only takes a couple of seconds for a puppy to squat and pee, so you must watch him very closely. Don’t stare at him (it’ll make him nervous), but keep an eye on him at all times when he’s out of his crate.
This will be easier if you limit his movements, either by keeping him on a leash or by restricting him to one or two rooms.
Don’t think you can watch TV, wash the dishes, or do something else and still watch your puppy. If you become distracted or preoccupied, accidents will happen and this will make housebreaking your puppy a longer, more difficult task.
It’s your responsibility to take him outside when he needs to go. Accidents will be your fault, not your dog’s.
4. Take your dog to his designated toilet area every hour or whenever he needs to go (see Step 2), whichever is less, and teach him to go on command.
• Every hour, fill your pocket with treats, release your pup from his crate and quickly take him outside to the designated toilet area.
Encourage him to go quickly by enthusiastically calling “Outside, outside, outside!” (If you take your time, he may pee or poop en route.
Also, hurrying him along tends to jiggle his bowels and bladder so that he really wants to go the moment you let him stand still and sniff his toilet area.)
Take your dog out every hour even if he’s old enough to hold it for longer than that. This practice is as much to train your dog—in the shortest time possible—to use the designated toilet area and go on command as it is for getting him outside in time to pee or poop!
• Use a leash (even if you have a fenced yard) to lead him to the correct place. This will also get him used to going potty while on the leash.
• Stand quietly (don’t stare at him) and wait until he begins to go. (If he stares at you instead of doing his business because he smells treats in your pocket, just look away and pretend to ignore him; eventually he’ll start sniffing and preparing to go.)
When he does start to go, quietly (so you don’t startle him) say “go potty.” (You can choose another cue. Make it something you wouldn’t mind saying in public.
Once you decide, be sure that you and your family use only this word/phrase, and use it every time he goes.)
• After your dog is finished, immediately give him a generous amount of tasty treats and lots of enthusiastic praise. Lavish rewards mean quicker results!
These steps are essential. If you just open the door and let your dog run out by himself to go potty, then give him a treat when he comes back to the house, his housebreaking will take longer and be less successful. Your dog will think he’s getting the reward for coming back to the house (versus going potty), and you’ll miss the opportunity to train him to go on command.
5. Spend time playing with or training your puppy, or take him for a nice walk (if he’s old enough).
If you take him outside to go, and then quickly bring him back in and ignore him after he does so, he’ll learn that “after I go, my fun ends!” Consequently, he may become reluctant to go potty when he’s outside (and end up going inside when he can no longer hold it).
It is much better to praise your puppy for going potty and then take him for a walk as an extra reward for a “job well done.” This extra reward will also encourage him to go potty more quickly.
What if he doesn’t go potty when you take him outside?
If your puppy enjoys the great outdoors but doesn’t go potty within a few minutes, take him back inside, put him in his crate, and try again in 10 minutes or so.
Repeat the process until he does go.
Your puppy will learn that if he doesn’t go potty when you take him outside to do so, he’ll be confined to his crate again (no go, no freedom).
Eventually he will go in the appropriate place at the appropriate time, and you will be able to give him appropriate rewards!
What about putting down newspapers?
Allowing a puppy to go potty on newspapers or some other kind of potty pad/material is a mistake. He will earn that he can go potty indoors, whenever he wants, as long as it’s on the paper.
He will never learn to hold it; he may never be truly housebroken.
Control what goes in so you can predict when it will come out.
What goes into a puppy will come out with predictable timing (depending on the age and size of your dog). Feeding your dog on a set schedule will help him to go potty on a regular schedule.
Generally, a puppy will need to go potty about 15 minutes after eating or drinking. If you let your dog eat and drink whenever he wants, you’ll be less able to predict when he’ll need to go out.
Feed your puppy at the same time each day. Leave the food there for ten minutes or so, then pick it up and put it away if he hasn’t finished it. A puppy younger than three months should be fed three times a day; older puppies and dogs should be fed twice a day.
Do not leave water out all day and night; put it down at regular intervals and pay attention to how much he drinks. Don’t let him drink water after 7 p.m.
Feeding dry food is better than canned food which contains more liquid.
Handling Inevitable Accidents
If you follow the steps in this report, you’ll have fewer accidents—but they will happen. Expect them. Don’t get upset at your dog when an accident happens. Instead, try to determine why it happened.
Did you get distracted when you should’ve been watching him? Did you forget to take him out at the right time? Figure out what you did wrong, so it doesn’t happen again.
Despite what many people believe, dogs do not intentionally pee or poop in your house because they are angry, lonely, or want to “get back at you” for something. Dogs don’t think of pee or poop as something “nasty” to be used out of spite.
And the so-called look of “guilt” or cowering in “shame” when you scold him is actually your dog’s way of showing appeasement and submitting to your obvious anger.
If you do not actually catch your puppy in the act, do nothing (except clean it up).
Do not—repeat—do not rub his nose in it, hit him, yell at him, shake him, or punish him in any way.
Dogs don’t think about time the way humans do. Your dog will not understand that you are upset about something that happened in the past—even if it was just a minute or two ago. He will think he’s in trouble for whatever he’s doing at the instant you discover the mess and go ballistic… whether he’s happily coming up to greet you or sitting quietly.
What if you do catch him in the act?
If you catch your dog squatting and about to go potty inside the house, make a sudden, surprising sound—such as slapping the wall—not to scare him, but to get his attention so that he momentarily stops what he’s doing.
Then urgently encourage your puppy to run outside with you. “Outside, outside, outside!” And finally, reward your puppy lavishly for going potty in the right place.
In any case, be sure to clean up all accidents quickly and thoroughly. You must eliminate any lingering scent so it doesn’t invite your puppy back for a repeat performance.
How Long Before He’s Housebroken?
When can you safely start leaving your puppy or dog alone in the house for a while? It depends on many things, including his age, size and—most importantly—your diligence in training him!
In general, if you follow these housebreaking guidelines, your dog should be making good progress within two months.
But some dogs learn quickly while others take more time. Gradually increase the amount of time you allow your puppy to be indoors, out of the crate, and monitor his progress.
Adult dogs generally need to go out at least once every four hours—first thing in the morning, around midday, late in the afternoon, and before going to sleep for the night.
If you can’t get be home to let your puppy or dog out often enough, consider hiring a pet sitter.
Expect accidents and set backs; they’re normal. Continue following the above steps and be patient.
Be Alert for Special Circumstances
There are a few reasons why it might be particularly difficult to housebreak a dog.
Dogs who were raised in puppy mills or pet stores, or who were regularly confined without the opportunity to go potty away from their sleeping area, will take longer to housebreak and require more patience and understanding from you.
Sudden changes in dog food brands or overindulgence in treats or table scraps can cause diarrhea.
There may be physical reasons, such as a urinary infection. Be sure to get your dog checked thoroughly by your vet.
In Summary
If you’re housebreaking a puppy, remember he doesn’t know anything yet. If you’re housebreaking an adult dog, there may be some old habits he has to “unlearn” first. Be patient, be consistent, be encouraging.
A few weeks of dedicated effort on your part will result in a lifetime of clean floors and a beautiful relationship with your dog!
By this point, you have gotten used to eating keto foods. Again, we are displacing, not replacing. The focus here, at this point, is to highlight the keto items in your meals.
Think of it this way. You’re in a big space, it’s dark, and then there’s a spotlight. There are several food items in the middle of the space. Instead of shining the spotlight on all the food items, shine it only on the keto items.
Now, this means that you’re not cutting out all the other foods on your meal plan. You’re just emphasizing, as far as your attention and your taste buds go, the keto-friendly items.
This is how you prepare yourself for the scale-down process. Otherwise, it’s easy to just hit a plateau. Seriously.
I’ve seen this happen. I’ve advised a lot of people who transitioned from the standard American diet to a keto diet, and this is the wall they keep hitting. They can’t let go of the other foods because they focus on all the items on their meal plans.
You have to start looking forward to the keto items. You have to start celebrating their taste profiles. Get yourself excited about these foods more than the diet.
This is a key change in your mindset because a lot of people who are pumped up about the keto diet are pumped up about the weight loss.
Let’s be completely honest here. They couldn’t really care less about the taste. A lot actually have misgivings, but they are excited about finally getting rid of that nasty spare tire they’ve been lugging around in their midsection since what seems like forever.
Believe me, I understand where these individuals are coming from. But until and unless you get excited about the food itself, instead of the diet or what you could get from the diet, you’re going to have a tough time.
There, I said it.
Sure, you may lose quite a bit of weight. It may seem, at least from the outside, that you’re doing well. But eventually, something will get knocked lose. It’s only a matter of time until you go back to your old eating patterns because you focus on all the items in your meal plan.
Unfortunately, not all of them are keto-friendly. This is why it’s really important to get used to eating keto foods and highlight them or focus on them more when you eat.
When you’re looking forward to your next meal, get excited about the keto food items. Do this for several days, if not weeks, and then you will be ready for the scale-down process.
Start to Scale Down Your Carb Intake Dramatically
Please understand that our goal here is to trigger ketosis using diet. This involves a transition phase. But eventually, you must be fully ketogenic.
In other words, at a certain point in time, you must flip over to using fat as your main energy source instead of sugar. This is the point where things get real with the keto diet.
All the previous chapters that I’ve walked you through prepare you for this point in time. This can only happen when you start to scale down your carb intake dramatically.
How come? As I have mentioned in a previous chapter, if insulin is in the picture, you’re not burning fat for fuel. Seriously. It really is that simple.
If you eat more than 12 to 25 carb grams every single day, your body will be producing insulin and you’re mostly burning sugar throughout the day for energy.
At this point in time, you’re going to have to scale down your carb intake dramatically so you can get below the 12 to 25-gram maximum daily carb intake threshold.
Thankfully, there are two wonder foods that you can rely on to get you there.
Your Keto Wonder Food #1: Eggs
I don’t know about you, but I’ve always had a softness for eggs. They’re compact, they’re pretty straightforward, they’re definitely easy to prepare, and they are loaded with nutrition.
Eggs are packed with all sorts of vitamins and nutrients, and they really don’t pack much calories on a gram per gram basis.
Did you know that Weight Watchers no longer give points for eggs? If you don’t know the Weight Watcher system, when you eat certain food items, you are given points. And you can only eat so much food until you hit a certain point threshold.
If you go over that maximum point threshold, you’re going to gain weight. If you eat below it, you lose weight.
For the longest time, Weight Watchers was giving eggs points. Well, they’ve wiped those points out. Now, you can basically eat quite a bit of eggs.
This is in keeping with recent research that shows that eggs are not bad for you. For the longest time, eggs were demonized in the United States and elsewhere as these cholesterol bombs.
Well, it turns out, after decades of research, that it’s sugar that is making us sick and fat. Not eggs. And definitely not dietary fat. Interesting how things change, right?
This is why it’s a good idea to load up on eggs. Maybe you like them boiled, maybe you like them sunny side up, it doesn’t matter. Load up on eggs. This is a great keto food.
One to two eggs should be fine. They fill you up and they make you feel fuller for a longer period of time.
Your Keto Wonder Food #2: Avocado
As I’ve mentioned earlier, avocado is not exactly a “default taste” for most people. It’s not like you wake up one day and you just say, “I can’t wait to enjoy a plain avocado.” That rarely happens.
Either you eat avocado in the form of ice cream, or you turn it into guacamole. But as a fruit by itself, added into a salad of greens, that takes some doing. It definitely takes some getting used to.
But if you really want to take your keto diet to the next level and scale down your carb intake dramatically, load up on avocado. It’s loaded in fat, but it also has dietary fiber and is loaded with vitamins. It’s really good for you.
And it is actually easy to get used to because it’s very versatile. You can mix it with all sorts of greens. You can mix it with egg. It’s good stuff.
Your Keto Wonder Food #3: Cauliflower
I include cauliflower here knowing full well that it does have carbohydrates. This is why it’s a good idea to use moderate amounts of cauliflower. Maybe you can prepare it once every other day, or a little more frequently.
I include cauliflower here because a lot of us veterans of the standard American diet are used to eating a significant amount of carbohydrates every day. In my case, I used to eat a lot of rice.
Cauliflower saved my life as far as my keto diet goes. Why? Instead of loading up on brown rice, red rice, or plain steamed white rice, I make cauliflower “rice.” You just grind it up and then you fry it.
You can turn it into “fried rice” or you can serve it plain fried or sautéed. It has roughly the same consistency as rice, but it’s loaded with protein instead of carbs.
Of course, you should only eat a moderate amount of protein daily. You can’t go overboard with protein because, as I have mentioned earlier in this book, your liver actually turns protein into sugar. This is called glucogenesis.
You don’t want this to happen because you want to minimize the amount of sugar, regardless of its source, in your system for ketosis to work its wonders.

The subject of natural or homegrown acne remedies is a broad one to cover as one must be able to separate the effective options from those that really amount to little more than old wives’ tales. Yet, with this said, someone searching for successful remedies for acne would be foolish to overlook the benefits of those natural remedies that have been passed on in families.
These sorts of remedies based upon common sense practices or herbs are typically successful for most mild cases of acne. It is when these cases grow more severe that one should consult a physician or dermatologist.
For centuries, civilizations relied exclusively upon herbal and natural remedies for the treatment of every ailment. No, there were no convenient drive-up pharmacies to get a prescription for manufactured medications. In order to find ways to help treat sickness one had to venture into the woods and search for cures there. And for the most part, nature provided for these needs through the various herbs that were found to have medicinal value.
The earliest physicians were nothing more than what we today call herbalists or at a certain point in time, apothecaries. Either way, the natural remedies they discovered were the basis for scientists who later found ways to create synthetic substitutes for these herbs and distill the innate properties down into a form that can be amplified or augmented by other elements.
A List of Common Natural Remedies
Hot/Cold Compresses
A chief natural remedy that is recommended more often than not is the usage of hot and cold wet towel compresses to reduce swelling and eliminate clogged pores–the major culprit in the production of acne.
Drinking Water
This natural remedy for acne is simple enough. The premise behind it the idea that if you drink a sufficient amount of water per day, typically 7-8 glasses of water a day, your body is cleansed of elements of toxicity that can actually contribute to the development and spread of acne. It also should be noted, that many natural remedies not only recommend to merely drink plain old ordinary water, but actually adding herbal ingredients by boiling fenugreek seeds and corn into the water.
Oils and Juices
Though it can seem odd, the benefits of using natural substances like almond oil – which can actually help with the removal of acne scars – cannot be ignored. Apricot juice helps to alleviate the presence of cysts by cutting through them.
Cucumber juice
Used as a topical application, either alone or combined with carrot juice, alfalfa or lettuce. Citric fruit juices – These types of juices, such as lemon juice, serve as a natural exfoliate, removing dead skin cells which might cause clogging of the pores.
You should allow it to dry on the face for approximately 10 minutes before rinsing it away with cool water.
Fenugreek leaves
This remedy provides great prevention of breakouts and involves taking the fenugreek leaves, crushing them, and making a paste out of them.
You should then apply it to infected areas every night, then wash it away the following morning with warm water.
Honey Mask
Because honey has naturally occurring antibacterial qualities it is often applied to the face as a mask, killing surface bacteria. Typically, the mask should be applied once or twice weekly depending upon the results of usage.
Distilled white vinegar
Apply the vinegar as a topical solution, letting it sit on the infected area for at least 5-10 minutes. Then rinse it thoroughly with cool water.
Often the vinegar can be a little too strong so it is recommended that you dilute it, though not too much.
Make-up or Cosmetic Usage
Simply put, this is a common sense remedy for acne. Just avoid using these products because more than likely the chemicals and oils used to manufacture them will clog the pores, which, in turn, leads to more breakouts.
Further Remedies
Beyond the common natural remedies for acne, there are a few other interesting options available and worth mentioning at this time.
Diet and vitamin supplements – Unlike former days, when the diets of civilizations included only naturally occurring food from the ground, the usage of fertilizers and pesticides has taken a toll on the nutrient content of much of the food that we eat.
Add to this the fact that our food is further manipulated by chemical preservatives and you have some further explanations for the occurrences of some acne breakout.
To combat this, observing a proper and balanced diet and taking a hearty multi-vitamin can actually go a long way towards preventing certain bio-chemical conditions which provide fertile ground for acne.
Echinacea and Oregon grape – These herbs are both useful for boosting the body’s immune system and also combating many forms of acne-causing bacteria.
Vitamin A – Used in large quantities, vitamin A has actually been used to successfully treat some severe forms of acne. But it must be clear that if you plan to use vitamin A as a possible remedy you should consult a physician because, if used in large enough doses, it can be toxic.
Zinc – This vitamin, if added to one’s diet, can actually aid in the healing of acne lesions and help in the prevention of scarring.
Over-the-Counter Acne Remedies
There are many types of over-the-counter treatments for acne. When dealing with acne, most people run to the local pharmacy and buy some sort of over-the-counter medication on the basis of recommendations from their friends or perhaps even television ads.
Yet despite friendly suggestions, it is a good idea to consult with a physician before using any kind of over-the-counter medication.
Even though acne is generally a benign condition, a doctor or dermatologist can advise you on what the best course of treatment might be as well as provide further suggestions based on the particular kind of acne you may be suffering from.
Considering the fact that a large number of acne treatment products are available, it can be hard to choose which one to try. You should not rely strictly upon the advice of friends or family because what may work for one person may not work for another.
Further, you should have some background knowledge about the active ingredients in various acne medications, so you can make a better-informed choice.
One of the most popular ingredients in acne medications is benzoyl peroxide. Found in gels and ointments, it helps by combating the bacteria that generally help cause acne.
It is also useful for removing dead skin cells that accumulate on the surface of the skin. It is these dead skin cells which combine with sebum to create blackheads and whiteheads.
Benzoyl peroxide has been proven to be safe and effective in combating lesions. It can also be used as a means of acne prevention once a breakout has cleared up by keeping the skin free from acne causing bacteria.
The only side effect associated with this ingredient is dry skin, and this can be avoided by decreasing the frequency that it is applied on the skin.
Another ingredient commonly found in a majority of acne medications is salicylic acid. This prevents acne by clearing up dead skin cells that are accumulating too quickly and clogging the pores.
If the medication you are using contains salicylic acid you should continue to use it after the skin has cleared up to prevent future outbreaks of acne. The only side effects associated with salicylic acid are dry, irritated skin.
Other ingredients
Besides the more common ones, there are other ingredients you may see in acne medication such as resorcinol and sulphur. Resorcinol causes the top layer of skin to peel and the dead skin cells that clog the pores are similarly affected.
It is often combined with sulphur. Although it is not known how exactly sulphur affects acne conditions, it has continued to be used effectively even after more than 50 years.
(Sulphur is often combined with other ingredients besides resorcinol like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide.)
Of all the ingredients that have been listed which are effective in fighting acne or preventing its outbreak, benzoyl peroxide is probably the most versatile.
It can be used in cleansing liquids or bars, as well as lotion, cream, and gels which are applied directly on the skin.
The cleansing products are used once or twice a day, while the creams and lotions can be used as needed.
They should be applied on the skin around the acne as well as the pimples themselves for overall effectiveness. Also, you should try to avoid getting benzoyl peroxide in the eyes, mouth or nose, as it will cause irritation or inflammation.
Many of the problems facing those who are trying to deal with acne are the pervasive sources of misinformation out there regarding the causes of acne.
Despite the numerous valid sources of information on and about acne that are now available, these myths persist and are passed on by word-of mouth to those unfortunate enough to suffer from the disease.
Rather than finding solutions and treatments to alleviate the symptoms, problems are often compounded. Ill advised treatments based off these myths can have less than effective results and can often do further damage in the case of severe acne.
In light of the influence that these myths can have on both understanding acne in general and the courses of treatment in particular, it would be wise to start with a quick overview of some of the more common myths that are out there, dispelling the misinformation with the truth about them.
After this we can move on to the question of what the actual causes of acne might be.
Myth #1: Acne is caused by poor hygiene.
It doesn’t matter how often, how ritually, you scrub your face and other areas affected by acne; this has no bearing on either the status of current a breakout or the creation of new problems.
In fact, this sort of rigorous regimen of washing and scrubbing can actually irritate skin and make the acne worse, not better.
Though you may have heard so from well meaning parents growing up or some other misinformed person, acne is not caused by poor hygiene. This doesn’t mean that hygiene isn’t important. In fact, good hygiene can help reduce the effects of acne if used in conjunction with acne treatment products.
Rather than frequent, harsh washing, it is generally recommended that you wash your face twice to three times a day with mild soap and then pat it dry – don’t scrub dry.
Myth #2: Acne is caused by diet.
“Don’t eat chocolate, it will give you pimples!” “They say that eating greasy foods can give you zits.” Most of you have heard these and other similar statements before, right? What they are saying, in effect, is that what you eat can cause acne. But, what they are saying isn’t true.
It is a myth, one of the more popular ones actually, about the causes of acne. Extensive scientific research has been conducted, searching for possible correlations between one’s diet and a possible cause of acne, and have not found anything conclusive.
However, each of us is different. Some people notice that breakouts are worse after eating certain foods–and the kinds of food differ with each person. For example, some people may notice breakouts after eating chocolate; while others have no effects with chocolate.
Instead, they notice breakouts occurring after they drink too much coffee or caffeine. These are just examples but they might be worth heading. If there is some sort of food or drink that might be affecting your acne, then cut back and see if that helps.
Myth #3: Acne is caused by stress.
Stress is not a direct cause of acne but it is true that some types of stress can cause the body to produce a hormone called cortisol, which can irritate existing acne.
Indirectly, some medication that we take to alleviate or control extreme stress or emotional problems like depression can be factors in the production of acne.
In fact, some medicines have acne listed as a possible side effect.
Myth #4: Acne will go away on its own.
This is generally not true and acne needs treatment in order to be cleared up. With the selection of acne treatment products available today there is no reason not to investigate and find what has the best results for those concerned.
In some cases, a dermatologist should be consulted and other forms of treatment can be pursued. → Myth #5: Tanning clears up skin.
In fact, this has the reverse effect. At first it may seem that the latest bake in the tanning bed or sunbathing has improved your complexion, but in fact the tan may only have masked or covered the acne. In reality, the sun can make the skin dry and irritated and this can lead to more breakouts.
On another note, if you do tan, make sure that you are using a sunscreen that doesn’t contain oils and other chemicals that might clog up your pores and cause acne to get worse. (Look for noncomedogenic or nonacnegenic on the label.)
Myth #6: Popping Zits Will Make Them Go Away Faster
Again, though this seems true, it is another myth. Rather than speeding up the process of healing, this action actually prolongs the situation as popping the whitehead caused the bacteria inside to be pushed deeper into the skin, which allows more infection to grow, and ultimately leads to scarring.
Myth #7: Only Teenagers get acne.
The truth is that about 25% to 30% of all people between the ages 25- 44 have active acne. So the idea that acne is only a problem for teens is yet another myth.
After covering these myths, it is important to note, that these are not all of the myths that are out there, circulating in the popular health magazines and on the Internet.
No, not by a long shot. There are dozens more where these came from.
The reason for their inclusion in this book is to help you, the reader, understand that the topic of acne has grown more complicated as new sources of information, both good and bad, have become available and that one must be very careful about researching the topic and deciding what sources to trust.

I care so deeply about this matter that I’m willing to take on the legal penalties, to sit in this prison cell, to sacrifice my freedom, in order to show you how deeply I care. Because when you see the depth of my concern, and how civil I am in going about this, you’re bound to change your mind about me, to abandon your rigid, unjust position, and to let me help you see the truth of my cause.

Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.
It’s the action, not the fruit of the action, that’s important. You have to do the right thing. It may not be in your power, may not be in your time, that there’ll be any fruit. But that doesn’t mean you stop doing the right thing. You may never know what results come from your action. But if you do nothing, there will be no result.

Non-violence and cowardice are contradictory terms. Non-violence is the greatest virtue, cowardice the greatest vice. Non-violence springs from love, cowardice from hate. Non-violence always suffers, cowardice would always inflict suffering. Perfect non-violence is the highest bravery. Non-violent conduct is never demoralising; cowardice always is.
Manliness consists not in bluff, bravado or lordliness. It consists in daring to do the right and facing consequences whether it is in matters social, political or other. It consists in deeds, not words.
Better than cowardice is killing and being killed in battle.
Fear has its use but cowardice has none.
A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave.
A No uttered from the deepest conviction is better than a Yes merely uttered to please, or worse, to avoid trouble.
I believe that a man is the strongest soldier for daring to die unarmed.
It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of nonviolence to cover impotence.
Man lives freely only by his readiness to die, if need be, at the hands of his brother, never by killing him.
You can chain me, you can torture me, you can even destroy this body, but you will never imprison my mind.
Nobody can hurt me without my permission.
The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.
It is any day better to stand erect with a broken and bandaged head than to crawl on one’s belly, in order to be able to save one’s head.
Let no one charge me with ever having abused or encouraged weakness or surrendered on matters of principle. But I have said, as I say again, that every trifle must not be dignified into a principle.
Anger is the enemy of Ahimsa [non-violence] and pride is a monster swallows it up.
Let us all be brave enough to die the death of a martyr, but let no one lust for martyrdom.
Real suffering bravely borne, melts even a heart of stone. Such is the potency of suffering. And there lies the key to Satyagraha.
The law of sacrifice is uniform throughout the world. To be effective it demands the sacrifice of the bravest and the most spotless.
It is unwise to be too sure one’s own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err.
Man should forget his anger before he lies down to sleep.
A man is but the product of his thoughts what he thinks, he becomes.
Always aim at complete harmony of thought and word and deed. Always aim at purifying your thoughts and everything will be well.
Anger and intolerance are the enemies of correct understanding.
As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world ‘ that is the myth of the atomic age ‘ as in being able to remake ourselves.
Men often become what they believe themselves to be. If I believe I cannot do something, it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe I can, then I acquire the ability to do it even if I didn’t have it in the beginning.
Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.
I am but a poor struggling soul yearning to be wholly good, wholly truthful and wholly non-violent in thought, word and deed, but ever failing to reach the ideal which I know to be true. It is a painful climb, but the pain of it is a positive pleasure to me. Each step upwards makes me feel stronger and fit for the next.
That service is the noblest which is rendered for its own sake.
My work will be finished if I succeed in carrying conviction to the human family that every man or woman, however weak in body, is the guardian of his or her self-respect and liberty, and that this defence prevails though the world be against the individual resister.
A principle is the expression of perfection, and as imperfect beings like us cannot practice perfection, we devise every moment limits of its compromise in practice.
There are times when you have to obey a call which is the highest of all, i.e. the voice of conscience even though such obedience may cost many a bitter tear, and even more, separation from friends, from family, from the state, to which you may belong, from all that you have held as dear as life itself. For this obedience is the law of our being.
Each one has to find his peace from within. And peace to be real must be unaffected by outside circumstances.
Don’t listen to friends when the Friend inside you says ‘Do this.’
Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.
The only tyrant I accept in this world is the still voice within.
The human voice can never reach the distance that is covered by the still small voice of conscience.
There is a higher court than courts of justice and that is the court of conscience. It supersedes all other courts.
We may never be strong enough to be entirely nonviolent in thought, word and deed. But we must keep nonviolence as our goal and make strong progress towards it.
Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.
Never has man reached his destination by persistence in deviation from the straight path.
Self-respect known no considerations.
Each one has to find his peace from within. And peace to be read must be unaffected by outside circumstances.
I do not want to forsee the future. I am concerned with taking care of the present. God has given me no control over the moment following.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not connote freedom to err.
Morality which depends upon the helplessness of a man or woman has not much to recommend it. Morality is rooted in the purity of our hearts.
The destructive Seven Blunders of the World that cause violence: Wealth without work. Pleasure without conscience. Knowledge without character. Commerce without morality. Science without humanity. Religion without sacrifice. Politics without principle.
I have always thought that having wealth flow to you without doing something of equal value in return was a form of theft. Most Americans hold a quite different view. They believe that people like Romney to whom money flows effortlessly like a supermagnet, who provide no goods or services to those who give them the money, who then spend that wealth as wastefully and conspicuously as possible, represent the very goal of existence. Nearly everyone who gets rich does it by short-changing, or even actively harming, their fellows, hardly admirable behaviour.
Man and his deed are two distinct things. Whereas a good deed should call forth approbation and a wicked deed dis-approbation, the doer of the deed, whether good or wicked always deserves respect or pity as the case may be. Hate the sin and not the sinner is a precept which though easy enough to understand is rarely practiced, and that is why the poison of hatred spreads in the world.
Is it not enough to know the evil to shun it’ If not, we should be sincere enough to admit that we love evil too well to give it up.
The moment there is suspicion about a person’s motives, everything he does becomes tainted.
A man who broods on evil is as bad a man who does evil, if he is no worse.
Man has reason, discrimination and free-will such as it is. The brute has no such thing. It is not a free agent, and knows no distinction between virtue and vice, good and evil. Man, being a free agent, knows these distinctions, and when he follows his higher nature, shows himself far superior to the brute, but when he follows his baser nature can show himself lower than the brute.
It has always been a mystery to me how men can feel themselves honoured by the humiliation of their fellow beings.
Woman in the companion of man, gifted with equal mental capacities. She has the right to participate in the minutest details in the activities of man, and she has equal right to liberty of freedom and liberty with him.
I believe in equality for everyone, except reporters and photographers.
Commonsense is a realised sense of proportion.
Gentleness, self-sacrifice and generosity are the exclusive possession of no one race or religion.
It is the law of love that rules mankind. Had violence, i.e. hate, rules us we would have become extinct long ago. And yet, the tragedy of it is that the so-called civilised men and nations conduct themselves as if the basis of society was violence.
Hatred ever kills, Love never dies, such is the vast difference between the two. What is ordained by love is retained for all time. What is obtained by hatred proves a burden in reality, for it increases hatred.
Where there is love there is life.
It may be long before the law of love will be recognised in international affairs. The machineries of government stand between and hide the hearts of one people from those of another.
To forgive is not to forget. The merit lies in loving in spite of the vivid knowledge that the one that much be loved is not a friend. There is no merit in loving an enemy when you forget him for a friend.
The only way love punishes in by suffering.
Justice that love gives is a surrender; justice that law gives is a punishment.
Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent than the one derived from fear of punishment.
Love never claims, it ever gives. Love ever suffers, never resents, never revenges itself.
Where love is, there God is also.
We may have our private opinions but why should they be a bar to the meeting of hearts’
The test of friendship is assistance in adversity, and that too, unconditional assistance, Co-operation which needs consideration is as a commercial contract and not friendship. Conditional co-operation is like adulterated cement which does not bind.
It is easy enough to be friendly to one’s friends. But to befriend the one who regards himself as your enemy is the quintessence of true religion. The other is mere business.
Friendship that insists on agreement on all matters is not worth the name. Friendship to be real must ever sustain the weight of honest differences, however sharp they be.
There is a sufficiency in the world for man’s need but not for man’s greed.
Capital as such is not evil; it is its wrong use that is evil. Capital in some form or other will always be needed.
God forbid that India should ever take to industrialism after the manner of the west’ keeping the world in chains. If [our nation] took to similar economic exploitation, it would strip the world bare like locusts.
It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.
Golden fetters are no less galling to a self-respecting man that iron ones; the sting lies in the fetters, not in the metal.
When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible but in the end, they always fall ‘ think of it, always.
My notion of democracy is that under it the weakest shall have the same opportunities as the strongest’ No country in the world today shows any but patronizing regard for the weak’ Western democracy, as it functions today, is diluted fascism’ True democracy cannot be worked by twenty men sitting at the center. It has to be worked from below, by the people of every village.
To see the universal and all-pervading Spirit of Truth face to face one must be able to love the meanest of creation as oneself. And a man who aspires after that cannot afford to keep out of any field of life. That is why my devotion to Truth has drawn me into the field of politics; and I can say without the slightest hesitation, and yet in all humility, that those who say that religion has nothing to do with politics do not know what religion means.
My Experiments With Truth
Just as a man would not cherish living in a body other than his own, so do nations not like to live under other nations, however noble and great the latter my be.
What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy’
It would conduce to national progress and save a great deal of time and trouble if we cultivated the habit of never supporting the resolutions either by speaking or voting for them if we had not either the intention or the ability to carry them out.
If I seem to take part in politics, it is only because politics encircles us today like the coil of a snake from which one cannot get out, no matter how much one tries. I wish therefore to wrestle with the snake.
Those who say religion has nothing to do with politics do not know what religion is.
What do I think of Western civilisation’ I think it would be a very good idea.
What is a war criminal’ Was not war itself a crime against God and humanity, and, therefore, were not all those who sanctioned, engineered, and conducted wars, war criminals’ War criminals are not confined to the Axis Powers alone. Roosevelt and Churchill are no less war criminals than Hitler and Mussolini. England, America and Russia have all of them got their hands dyed more or less red ‘ not merely Germany and Japan.
Nations are born out of travail and suffering
I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any. I refuse to live in other people’s houses as an interloper, a beggar or a slave.
Measures must always in a progressive society be held superior to men, who are after all imperfect instruments, working for their fulfillment.
This campaign of non-cooperation has no reference to diplomacy, secret or open. The only diplomacy it admits of is the statement and pursuance of truth at any cost.
I claim that human mind or human society is not divided into watertight compartments called social, political and religious. All act and react upon one another.
For me every ruler is alien that defies public opinion.
It is my own firm belief that the strength of the soul grows in proportion as you subdue the flesh.
The spirit of democracy is not a mechanical thing to be adjusted by abolition of forms. It requires a change of heart.
Man becomes great exactly in the degree in which he works for the welfare of his fellow men.
First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.
An opponent is entitled to the same regard for his principles as we would expect others to have for ours. Non-violence demands that we should see every opportunity to win over opponents.
Indeed one’s faith in one’s plans and methods is truly tested when the horizon before one is the blackest.
Honest disagreement is often a good sign of progress.
Non-cooperation is an attempt to awaken the masses, to a sense of their dignity and power. This can only be done by enabling them to realise that they need not fear brute force, if they but know the soul within.
Public opinion alone can keep a society pure and healthy.
Non-cooperation is beyond the reach of the bayonet. It has found an abiding place in the Indian heart. Workers like me will go when the hour has struck, but non-cooperation will remain.
Non-cooperation is directed not against men but against measures. It is not directed against the Governors, but against the system they administer. The roots of non-cooperation lies not in hatred but in justice if not in love.
Insistence on truth can come into play when one party practices untruth or injustice. Only then can love be tested. True friendship is put to the test only when one party disregards the obligation of friendship.
You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.
If we want to cultivate a true spirit of democracy we cannot afford to be intolerant. Intolerance betrays want of faith in one’s cause.
Moral authority is never retained by any attempt to hold onto it. It comes without seeking and is retained without effort.
Adaptability is not imitation. It means power of resistance and assimilation.
It is quite proper to resist and attack a system, but to resist and attack its author is tantamount to resisting and attacking oneself, for we are all tarred with the same brush, and are children of one and the same Creator, and as such the divine powers within us are infinite. To slight a single human being, is to slight those divine powers and thus to harm not only that Being, but with Him, the whole world.
If co-operation is a duty, I hold that non-co-operation also under certain conditions is equally a duty.
I believe that cunning is not only morally wrong but also politically expedient, and have therefore always discountenanced its use even from the practical standpoint.
Healthy discontent is the prelude to progress.
How can one be compelled to accept slavery’ I simply refuse to do the master’s bidding. He may torture me, break my bones to atoms and even kill me. He will then have my dead body, not my obedience. Ultimately, therefore, it is I who am the victor and not he, for he has failed in getting me to do what he wanted done.
Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the act depriving a whole nation of arms as the blackest.
The only virtue I want to claim is truth and non-violence. I lay no claim to super-human powers. I want none. I wear the same corruptible flesh that the weakest of my fellow beings wears, and am therefore as liable to err as any. My services have many limitations, but God has up to now blessed them in spite of the imperfections.
I claim to be a simple individual liable to err like any other fellow mortal. I own, however, that I have humility enough to confess my errors and to retrace my steps.
The first condition of humaneness is a little humility and a little diffidence about the correctness of one’s conduct and a little receptiveness.
It is man’s social nature which distinguishes him from the brute creation. If it is his privilege to be independent, it is equally his duty to be inter-dependent. Only an arrogant man will claim to be independent of everybody else and be self-contained.
Man falls from the pursuit of the ideal of plain living and high thinking the moment he wants to multiply his daily wants. Man’s happiness really lies in contentment.
As a rule, the mind, residing in a body that has become weakened by pampering, is also weak, and where there is no strength of mind there can be no strength of soul.
Increase of material comforts, it may be generally laid down, does not in any way whatsoever conduce to moral growth.
Suffering cheerfully endured, ceases to be suffering and is transmuted into an ineffable joy.
I am a Puritan myself, but I am catholic toward others.
I would rather see the race of man extinct than that we should become less than beasts by making the noblest of God’s creation, woman, the object of our lust.
No sacrifice is worth the name unless it is a joy. Sacrifice and a long face go ill together. Sacrifice is ‘making sacred’. He must be a poor specimen of humanity who is in need of sympathy for his sacrifice.
We do not need to proselytise either by our speech or by our writing. We can only do so really with our lives. Let our lives be open books for all to study.
Literary education is of no value, if it is not able to build up a sound character.
There will have to be rigid and iron discipline before we achieve anything great and enduring, and that discipline will not come by mere academic argument and appeal to reason and logic. Discipline is learnt in the school of adversity.
I worship God as Truth only. I have not yet found Him, but I am seeking after Him. I am prepared to sacrifice the things dearest to me in pursuit of this quest. Even if the sacrifice demanded by very life, I hope I may be prepared to give it.
Power invariably elects to go into the hands of the strong. That strength may be physical or of the heart or, if we do not fight shy of the word, of the spirit. Strength of the heart connotes soul-force. Let it be remembered that physical force is transitory, even as the body is transitory. But the power of spirit is permanent even as the spirit is everlasting.
The badge of the violent is his weapon, spear, sword or rifle. God is the shield of the non-violent.
No religion which is narrow and which cannot satisfy the test of reason, will survive the coming reconstruction of society in which the values will have changed and character, not possession of wealth, title or birth, will be the test of merit.
As soon as we lose the moral basis, we cease to be religious. There is no such thing as religion over-riding morality. Man, for instance, cannot be untruthful, cruel or incontinent and claim to have God on his side.
Birth and death are not two different states, but they are different aspects of the same state. There is as little reason to deplore the one as there is to be pleased over the other.
Before the throne of the Almighty, man will be judged not by his acts, but by his intentions. For God alone reads our hearts.
It is through truth & non-violence that I can have some glimpse of God. Truth & non-violence are my God. They are the obverse and reverse of the same coin.
Every moment of your life is infinitely creative and the universe is endlessly bountiful. Just put forth a clear enough request, and everything your heart desires must come to you.
Faith’ must be enforced by reason’ when faith becomes blind it dies.
I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.
In the attitude of silence the soul finds the path in a clearer light, and what is elusive and deceptive resolves itself into crystal clearness. Our life is a long and arduous quest after Truth.
Infinite striving to be the best is man’s duty; it is its own reward. Everything else is in God’s hands.
It is the quality of our work which will please God and not the quantity.
A vow is a purely religious act which cannot be taken in a fit of passion. It can be taken only with a mind purified and composed and with God as witness.
There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form of bread.
Whenever I see an erring man, I say to myself I have also erred; when I see a lustful man I say to myself, so was I once; and in this way I feel kinship with everyone in the world and feel that I cannot be happy without the humblest of us being happy.
Fear of death makes us devoid both of valour and religion. For want of valour is want of religious faith.
Religion is a matter of the heart. No physical inconvenience can warrant abandonment of one’s own religion.
Are creeds such simple things like the clothes which a man can change at will and put on at will’ Creeds are such for which people live for ages and ages.
I have but shadowed forth my intense longing to lose myself in the Eternal and become merely a lump of clay in the Potter’s divine hands so that my service may become more certain because uninterrupted by the baser self in me.
The spirit of non-violence necessarily leads to humility. Non-violence means reliance on God, the rock of ages. If we would seek his aid, we must approach Him with a humble and contrite heart.
God is, even though the whole world deny him. Truth stands, even if there be no public support. It is self-sustained.
When I admire the wonders of a sunset or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in the worship of the creator.
Religion is more than life. Remember that his own religion is the truest to every man, even if it stands low in the scales of philosophical comparison.
In nature there is a fundamental unity running through all the diversity we see about us. Religions are given to mankind so as to accelerate the process of realisation of fundamental unity.
I believe in absolute oneness of God and therefore also of humanity.
My trust is solely in God. And I trust men only because I trust God. If I had no God to rely upon, I should be like Timon, a hater of my species.
One’s own religion is after all a matter between oneself and one’s Maker and no one else’s.
My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my God. Non-violence is the means of realising Him.
A religion that takes no account of practical affairs and does not help to solve them is no religion.
Every formula of every religion has in this age of reason, to submit to the acid test of reason and universal assent.
God tries his votaries through and through but never beyond endurance. He gives them strength enough to go through the ordeal he prescribes for them.
It is easy enough to say, ‘I do not believe in God’. For God permits all things to be said of Him with impunity. he looks at our acts. And any breach of His Law carries with it, not its vindictive, but it purifying, compelling punishment.
Human society is a ceaseless growth, and unfoldment in terms of spirituality.
If patience is worth anything, it must endure to the end of time. And a living faith will last in the midst of the blackest storm.
Though we may know Him by a thousand names, He is one and the same to us all.
I have found by experience that man makes his plans to be upset by God, but, at the same time, where the ultimate goal is the search of truth, on matter how a man’s plans are frustrated the issue is never injurious and often better than anticipated.
A clean confession combined with a promise never to commit the sin again, when offered before one who has the right to receive it, is the purest type of repentance.
Purity of personal life is the one indispensable condition for building up a sound education.
Perfection is the exclusive attribute of God, and it is indescribable, untranslatable. I do believe that it is possible for human beings to become perfect, even as God is perfect. It is necessary for all of us to aspire after that perfection but when that blessed state is attained, it become indescribable, indefinable.
What is true of the individual will be tomorrow true of the whole nation if individuals will but refuse to lose heart and hope.
Of all the animal creations of God, main is the only animal who has been created in order that he may know his Maker. Man’s aim is life is not therefore to add from day to day to his material prospects and to his material possessions, but his predominant calling is, from day to day to come nearer to his own Maker.
Spiritual relationship is far more precious than physical. Physical relationship divorced from spiritual is body without soul.
Mankind is notoriously too dense to read the signs that God sends from time to time. We require drums to be beaten into our ears, before we should wake from our trance and hear the warning and see that to lose oneself in all, is the only way to find oneself.
I do not want any patronage, as I do not give any. I am a lover of my own liberty, and so I would do nothing to restrict yours. I simply want to please my own conscience which is God.
But for my faith in God, I should have been a raving maniac.
There is an orderliness in the universe, there is an unalterable law governing everything and every being that exists or lives. It is no blind law; for no blind law can govern the conduct of living beings.
We are merely instruments of the Almighty’s will and therefore ignorant of what helps us forward and what acts as an impediment. We must thus rest satisfied with the knowledge only of the means and if these are pure, we can fearlessly leave the end to take care of itself.
Constant development is the law of life, and a man who always tries to maintain his dogmas in order to appear consistent drives himself into a false position.
When anything assumes the strength of a creed, it becomes self-sustained and derives the needed support from within.
I do dimly perceive that whilst everything around me is ever-changing, ever-dying, there is underlying all that change a living Power that is changeless, that holds all together, that creates, dissolves and recreates. That informing power or spirit is God. And since nothing else I see merely through the senses can or will persist, He alone is.
Intellect takes us along in the battle of life to a certain limit, but at the crucial moment it fails us. Faith transcends reason. It is when the horizon is the darkest and human reason is beaten down to the ground that faith shines brightest and comes to our rescue.
I reject any religious doctrine that does not appeal to reason and is in conflict with morality.
The world is touched by sacrifice. It does not then discriminate about the merits of a cause. No so God ‘ He is all seeing. He insists on the purity of the cause and on adequate sacrifice thereof.
There is nothing that wastes the body like worry, and one who has any faith in God should be ashamed to worry about anything whatsoever.
Non-violence requires a double faith, faith in God and also faith in man.
Prayer is not asking. It is a longing of the soul. It is daily admission of one’s weakness’ It is better in prayer to have a heart without words than words without a heart.
Prayer is not an old woman’s idle amusement. Properly understood and applied, it is the most potent instrument of action.
Prayer is the key of the morning and the bolt of the evening.
In prayer it is better to have a heart without words than words without a heart.
Each one prays to God according to his own light.
Let everyone try and find that as a result of daily prayer he adds something new to his life, something with which nothing can be compared.
To give pleasure to a single heart by a single act is better than a thousand heads bowing in prayer.
Prayer is not asking. It is a longing of the soul. It is daily admission of one’s weakness. It is better in prayer to have a heart without words than words without a heart.
If I had no sense of humor, I would long ago have committed suicide.
Imitation is the sincerest flattery.

GANDHI QUOTES
You don’t need to have a fancy gym membership to lose weight. Instead, all you really need is motivation, determination and consistency. Stick with these three and losing weight can be practically free if you put your head to it.
In fact, walking is the least expensive and most straightforward way of dropping those stubborn pounds. If you do it correctly and pair it with the right techniques the results can be extremely impressive.
So to get you motivated, know that walking increases your metabolism and reduces stress. Your body starts to burn more calories even at rest due to stronger muscles.
Next comes determination. Following certain exercises and strategies before and after the actual walk will boost the effectiveness of your workout. Don’t let anything get in the way of that.
And to help you with consistency, step by step instructions to plan your walk are discussed below.
Pre-walk warm-up exercises
Warming up your body before starting any workout reduces the chances of injuries to the muscles. It eases your body into the ensuing regimen. Before your actual walk, start off with an easy paced stroll to get your body going. After this follow simple stretching exercises involving all the muscles used during the walk. You can do this along the following lines:
Take long breaths. Stretch your arms in front and take them all the way up. Slowly release them to the sides.
Make circles with your neck.
Lift your right arm and take it over your head. Stretch it so that you can feel the tension on the right side of the body. Repeat the same on the left side.
Make at least six circles with each ankle in clockwise and counter-clockwise directions.
After this, move your legs from your buttocks back and forth a few times.
Make small circles with each leg, in the form of an eight, 15 to 20 times.
Bend your knees and open your feet as wide as your hips. Slowly rotate your hips for ten repetitions one way then the other.
Stretch your arms to the sides and swivel them 12 times. Do the same with your shoulders.
Hop forward like a rabbit twisting your body left and right. Do 20 reps.
Other exercises like squats and lunges are can also be included in pre-walk stretching.
What is the optimal posture for walking?
Before starting the actual walk it is important that your posture is correct. A bad posture will reduce the calorie burning benefits of walking. Also, it can induce more injury to your back and legs. There are four aspects of a perfect posture.
Neck
Straighten your neck so that the space between your ears and shoulders is maximized. However, do not tense your neck as it can lead to constricted breathing. Let down your shoulders to avoid any sore muscles post-walk.
Arms
Move your arms fluidly back and forth keeping them at a 90degree angle. Moreover, let them swing as far back as they can without any strain to the muscles. Keep your hands relaxed; not in a fist.
Pelvis
Keep your back straight and long. Slightly tug your abdominal muscles inside so that they are taut. Your hips should be relaxed however they should not wiggle when you walk.
Feet
Plant your feet firmly. Slightly glide your feet off the floor when walking so that your heels are the first to leave the ground and your toes are the last. Your steps should be long but just enough to avoid any injury to the leg muscles.
Walking strategies
Planning out your walks beforehand can help you fight procrastination. A good recommendation is to go on a walk soon after waking up as your body burns most calories in the morning when it has no energy from food to consume.
Keep your pace fast while walking as this helps burn more calories. Moreover, increase your pace during your workout for a few minutes. When increasing your speed, go for more steps per minute instead of longer steps.
Also, incorporate varying terrains into your workout. Go for a hike or walk on grass, jogging tracks and footpaths interchangeably.
Decide which routes you are going to take during the week. For instance, plan to go uphill three times a week. Designate three days for fast-paced intense walks whereas two days for moderate walks.
Instead of going for an hour of a continuous walk, break down your walks into 20-minute spans. Walking a little after each meal is also better as it helps to balance sugar levels.
If all this seems much for you, then stick to the basics and follow one simple rule. Try to take 10000 to 15000 steps a day. Keep a pedometer with you and monitor your movement. If even this seems like a lot, start with fewer steps and slowly work your way up to the goal.
Post-workout stretches
After the walk, it is important to cool your body and bring it to normal temperature. Also, post walk stretches help release some of the muscle tension and avoid any soreness.
After the workout, slow down and walk the final furlong at a slow speed. Sit on a bench or a chair and extend one leg out. Plant the heel, flex your foot and lean forward. You will feel some tension in the leg. Repeat it with the other leg. Keep each posture for 10 to 20 seconds.
After this, hold on to a support. Extend your left leg back keeping your heel on the ground. Bend the right knee and stoop towards the support. Hold the position for 20 seconds and repeat with the other leg.
With support, stand with legs slightly wider than the shoulders. Keep one foot straight and tilt the other foot outwards at an angle. Perform a lunge in the direction of the tilted foot making sure that the knee does not go past the toes. Repeat on other side.
The stretching exercises for pre and post walk can be performed interchangeably as well.
